Me, Myself, and Psoriasis

Don’t Judge Me… (Trayvon Martin)

Many times I have refused to wear short sleeves or shorts due to somebody judging me because of my psoriasis. I always feared that people would look at me and assume I have a contagious disease. I always figured that people would look at me in disgust and may be fearful to get next to me or touch me. So I hid…

Another thing I have feared is people judging me because I’m black, and unlike psoriasis, I can never get rid of my color or stop being black… Neither could Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old who was shot and killed because of one thing… He was judged. He was perceived as a mischievousness black kid who was up to no good. Just one month ago he was on the phone with his girlfriend, wearing a hoodie and carrying a pack of candy and ice tea… But the candy, the drink, nor the hoodie is what made him suspicious looking… Being black is the crime he committed. This kid was killed by Keith Zimmerman. A man who assumed that Trayvon was up to no good… A man who assumed that Trayvon was a thief… A man who shot and killed an innocent teen who had no weapons on him, only a pack of skittles and a drink.

I want this to be a lesson for all of us… Judging someone is a natural response. It’s a survival skill and according to The Times of Indiana it is something everybody will do within 7 seconds of laying their eyes on another person… But the problem is what you do after you make your judgment…  The issue in Trayvon Martin’s case is that not only was he judged as a criminal, but pursued by Zimmerman, then killed.

I am not telling you not to be conscious when the situation permits. But being aware has nothing to do with how you respond to the other person, it’s how you decide to handle YOURSELF… Zimmerman could have easily called the police and left it at that, instead he decided to take the law in his own hands. Now a son, a brother, a boyfriend, and a kid is dead.

I hope Zimmerman is trialed and convicted… And although it won’t bring Trayvon back there will be some justice served.

  1. Excellent post. This hits so many people very hard. As a mother and as a black woman it hurts. Justice is due. Those that refuse to arrest Zimmerman must realize that everyone in support of Martin and his family will not let this one ride.

  2. Cant wait to start reading your blog!
I have psoriasis as well and was diagnosed when I was 11.
Im at that point where I refuse to wear shorts or t-shirts so that I can avoid embarrassment and humiliation.
Im currently trying a raw food and vegan lifestyle to see if it will help get rid of it.
    Best of luck!
